TENNIS ELBOW DOES NOT MEAN YOU’RE A TENNIS PLAYER
Tennis elbow is one of the most common and frequent causes of elbow pain. It occurs when there is repetitive overuse of tendons and muscles at the elbow and forearm. This form of injury can be caused by a variety of activities such as but not limited to construction, typing, painting, plumbing, and farming. And yes, tennis elbow can occur with racket sports or overhead athletes.
The main symptom of tennis elbow is pain. Pain usually originates at the elbow but may radiate into the forearm, wrist, and even sometimes hand. Pain is often described as burning, aching and sharp with activity but with chronic tennis elbow pain can also occur at rest. An individual who has tennis elbow can demonstrate grip weakness and may also have difficulty turning doorknobs, lifting objects, typing or using a computer mouse, and sleeping.
If you are experiencing tennis elbow symptoms there are several treatments you may try at home to help ease the pain. These include:
Rest: Taking a break from activities that cause pain.
Ice: Icing your elbow and forearm for 10-15 minutes, 3 times per day.
Massage: Rubbing the elbow and forearm to tolerance for 3-5 minutes.
Stretch: Performing a forearm stretch. 5 repetitions each direction for 5-10 second hold, three times a day.
Strength: If not painful performing an eccentric forearm exercise with 1-2#. Don’t worry about having a weight. You can use a can of vegetables or a water bottle. Perform 2 sets of 20 repetitions, 2 times a day.
