Can YOU go the DISTANCE?? YES! (Part 1 of 3)

New Years resolutions may have already faded, however, as the weather warms up you may be re-energized to have a new fitness goal.  What about a Couch to 5K program?

Depending on your current fitness level, many times running may seem daunting, especially if you are new to running. However, when you start with walking and running intervals in a Couch to 5K program, it’s easier to build your endurance.

First off, how far is a 5K? It is 3.1 miles. Don’t focus on the distance, just focus on MOVING. Couch to 5K workouts initially have you running for only 60-second intervals! This doesn’t necessarily mean that you must run fast.  In fact, you can jog or even walk fast if you increase your cadence and intensity compared to your walking pace. When adopting this run/walk method, you can keep moving for longer than if you had to run continuously. These walking breaks allow you to recover a bit and continue training.

Various Couch to 5K programs are set-up to help achieve your goal in 6-12 weeks.  If you are starting with no recent fitness history, it may be a better to choose a longer program to acclimate, increase endurance, and prevent injury.  You may also want to choose a race to keep you motivated.  It’s best to choose one at least 3 months from when you start.

You may also want to try an app on your phone to keep you on schedule. Added recommendations include:

  • Strava
  • MapMyRun
  • MyFitnessPal
  • C25K

If you are a person who is goal oriented and succeeds with structure this is a good plan for you.  The Couch to 5K keeps you focused and motivated as you see the progress.  Stay tuned for more details on how to effectively train, prevent injury, and hear about local races in 2023.
